Best BJJ Gi: Take The Test! (Top 39 B

You need the most durable BJJ gi because weak flimsy gis can’t keep up with your pressure, am I right?

Contents hide

So go ahead and choose one of the most durable BJJ gis from my list below

A BJJ gi that ripped right through the collar!

And ‘The Path’ is their strongest, yet breathable, BJJ gi due to a unique weave technique

It’s 550 gsm (grams per square meter), which is the heaviest gi I still consider practical for BJJ

If you want the most durable gi ever, look no further: the Tatami ‘The Tank’ is 950 gsm which is extremely heavy

What makes a BJJ gi durable?

What makes a BJJ gi durable?

There are a few things that make a BJJ gi durable

Material: A BJJ gi made of durable material will last longer than one made of less durable material

(But most gis are made of cotton, which is a strong fabric, so you don’t have to worry about this one too much )Weave: A BJJ gi with gold or pearl weave stitching is more durable than one with a traditional weak single weave and a double weave is stronger than single weave

(But most single weave gis nowadays are at least pearl weave, and double weaves are more for judo gis because it makes the gi very stiff – so basically you don’t have to worry about this )Reinforced stitching: A durable BJJ needs reinforced stitching at the key areas that break most often in a gi, such as around the collar, the armpit and under the kneesWeight: A heavier BJJ gi is more durable than a lighter one

This is actually the most important factor for a durable BJJ gi, which is why I’ll recommend several heavyweight BJJ gis in this article

The Most Durable BJJ Gi

The Most Durable BJJ Gi

Let me tell you about the most durable BJJ gis

Most of these are heavyweight gis, but I also put in the most durable gis among the lighter weight options

GiWeightDurabilityGold BJJ Valiant (shop this gi)550 gsmVery highOrigin the Path (shop this gi)unknownVery highTatami ‘the Tank’ (shop this gi)950 gsmRidiculously highGold BJJ ultra strong (shop this gi)450 gsmVery highGold BJJ Aeroweave (shop this gi)270 gsmHighTable: The most durable BJJ per weight

The Gold BJJ Valiant gi is the most durable BJJ gi from Gold BJJ (a brand I really like)

That’s 22% heavier than the standard 450 gsm BJJ gis

And this gi still has all the reinforced stichting techniques that make the other Gold BJJ models so strong

So the combination of weight and reinforced stichting very strong and I recommend it highly if you’re looking for a durable BJJ gi

Origin is the BJJ gi brand from Jocko Willink, a famous retired navy Seal (you may have heard him on the Joe Rogan podcast)

They are all about quality, and all their gis are made in America

It uses a patented new weave technique which makes it both more breathable and stronger

3 Tatami ‘The Tank’ Heavyweight BJJ Gi

3 Tatami ‘The Tank’ Heavyweight BJJ Gi

The Tatami ‘the Tank’ is an ultra heavyweight BJJ gi

I’ll mention it here because it’s super durable, even though I don’t recommend that you buy it

It’s 950 grams per square meter (gsm), which makes it more than twice as heavy as normal 450 gsm BJJ gis

There are more heavy gis like this, most of them from Judo

But you should understand that Judo gis also fit much looser, so it’s less problematic that they’re so stiff

And you simply need less mobility in Judo than in BJJ

So I don’t recommend buying such a heavy BJJ gi, because they’re so stiff that you can’t move around freely

4 Gold BJJ Ultra Strong Kimono

4 Gold BJJ Ultra Strong Kimono

The Gold BJJ Ultra Strong model is another durable gi from Gold BJJ

This one weighs in at 450 gsm, which is normal for BJJ gis

So it’s not quite as strong and durable as the Valiant gi I mentioned above, which is 550 gsm

But the upshot is that it’s lighter, which in my opinion makes it more comfortable

So if you want a durable BJJ gi that isn’t very heavy, I recommend this one

The Gold BJJ Aeroweave is actually a lightweight gi, which automatically makes it not the most durable BJJ gi out there

But I want to mention it because of the lightweight gis, it’s the most durable one

I’m a huge fan of lightweight gis myself, because they’re very comfortable and they keep you cool during rolling, which is important for your cardio

So if you want a durable BJJ gi, but you also want it to be lightweight, I recommend this one

How to maintain a durable bjj gi?

How to maintain a durable bjj gi?

You can make your BJJ gi more durable by treating it well

Here are some things that you do that affect how durable a BJJ gi is:

If you have multiple gis that you rotate they will last much longer than when you always use the same one

Washing your BJJ gi in cold water and hanging it to dry will make it last longer than washing it in hot water and putting it in the dryerWhat you wash it with

Washing your BJJ gi with a mild detergent will make it last longer than washing it with a harsh detergent

Where is my BJJ gi most likely to break?

Where is my BJJ gi most likely to break?

A BJJ gi commonly breaks around the areas that receive the moest stress, which are the ares around the collars, the armpit and the knees

Collars: The collar areas on your BJJ gi can rip because people are always yanking on your collarsArmpit: The armpits of your kimono can rip because they strech out a lot when you move your arm (this is also a problem for normal clothes)Knees: The knees of your BJJ gi pants are oftern worn down gradually because you sit on your knees a lot, and then eventually they rip when someone makes a grip on your pant legs

A BJJ gi that ripped at the knees (very common)

That’s why gis with reinforced stichting in strategic areas are much more durable than gis without it

What’s the heaviest BJJ gi?

What’s the heaviest BJJ gi?

The heaviest BJJ gi I ever saw is the Keiko Gold Weave Kimono at 1000 grams per square meter (gsm)

Runner up heavyweight gis are the Tatami Tank and the Panda Armor at 950 gsm

And I’m sure there are some Judo gis that are even heavier

Are you ready for a more premium BJJ gi?

It’s a natural progression for BJJ practitioners to start out with a basic gi when they’re a beginner, and then graduate into more and more high end jiu jitsu gis as they become more advanced

In this post I give you some options for what I think are the best premium BJJ gi options

Origin is known for producing the highest quality BJJ gis

All of their gi’s are made in America and this DNA Atleta competition gi is their most popular model

It’s very lightweight and comfortable but also very strong and durable

Origin is the leading producer of premium BJJ gis and the competition DNA Atleta gi is their most popular product

All Origin products are made in America and they stand for quality above all

The gis aren’t fancy but have a clean and classic design

The Gold BJJ Aeroweave is a lightweight premium jiu jitsu gi

It’s actually my favorite gi

It’s the lightest BJJ gi ever made, but it’s also very strong due to strategic reinforced stiching

It looks great, it’s super comfortable and it’s surprisingly affordable

The Shogun Tao is a premium design BJJ gi

It has beautiful Japanese inspired artwork and I think it looks very cool

It’s a nice touch because it makes you gi much cooler, without doing away with the classic look of the gi while you wear ir

4 Gold BJJ Ultra Strong gi

4 Gold BJJ Ultra Strong gi

The Gold BJJ Ultra strong gi is a premium quality BJJ gi

It’s 450 grams per square meter (which is a standard weight for gi’s) but with an extra strong gold weave

And the gold logo looks really classy

The Valiant gi is the heaviest gi from Gold BJJ

Coming in at 550 gsm compared to the normal 450 gsm it’s 22% heavier than normal gis

Gold BJJ puts this forward as a good competition gi – but keep in mind that you’ll have to weigh in wearing this monster of a gi!

(Unless you go through weigh-ins in your light gi and then change into your actual competition gi – who would do that?

6 Shoyoroll BJJ Gi

6 Shoyoroll BJJ Gi

Shoyoroll is a limited edition luxury BJJ gi brand

They’re famous for colabs with high profile athletes and them make extremely high end, expensive BJJ gis

I do like Shoyoroll, but it’s hard for me to recommend them, because Shoyoroll gis are always out of stock

And they work with drops so if you read this post a 2 months after I wrote it, their product line might be completely different already

The Sanabul Nasa gi is a limited edition BJJ gi (it might be sold out when you read this)

It’s definitely a fancy BJJ gi

What Do I Need a Premium BJJ Gi for?

What Do I Need a Premium BJJ Gi for?

There’s a few reasons why you might want to upgrade to a more premium high end BJJ gi as you get further into the journey

To look good while training

To look good while training

One reason to buy a more premium BJJ gi is because they look better

Some common design features of premium BJJ gis are uncommon gi color, cool patches, and art on the inside of the gi jacket

But also you just avoid a ‘cheap’ look that some lower end gis have

Another common reason to buy a premium gi is if you have to do a weight cut for competition

In that case you want a gi that’s as light as possible for your weight cut, and as strong as possible so that it survives the competition

And the combination of lightweight + strong comes at a premium price

(Also check my guide on the best lightweight BJJ gis if you’re interested in this )

Some gis even use anti-gripping technology to help competitors in their matches

They do this by using a different weave for the collars and sleeves that is harder to get a grip on than the standard weave

People that are very tall and skinny or very short and sturdy often don’t get a nice fit in the regular gi sizes

Fortunately, the major brands are now putting out more gis for uncommon body types

But extreme cases still need to get a gi from a brand that specializes in their body type

(Check my guide on the best BJJ gis for tall and skinny guys if this is your situation )

One of the main advantages of premium BJJ gis is that they last way longer

They’re often thicker overall, and also add extra padding and stitches on critical pressure points, such as on the knees (did you ever notice that your gi pants always rip right below your knees? )

Some gis are even dual weave, which means that for example the top half of the jacket is made thicker than the bottom half, to make it strong where necessary while keeping it light overall

Obviously, this is a hassle to make for the manufacturer, which is why these types of gis are more expensive as well

Learn BJJ much faster

Why are BJJ gis so expensive?

Why are BJJ gis so expensive?

There’s plenty of cheap BJJ gis out there, but the best premium BJJ gis are more expensive for a good reason

They’re made to last longer, to look better, to compete in or for uncommon body types

These specializes BJJ gis are harder to make and therefore more expensive

About Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi’s

BJJ gi’s are designed with weight in mind, they are designed to be lightweight, durable and make sure that when you stand on those scales, all those weeks of skipping seconds will make it all worth it

Competitions gi’s don’t just help you shave the pounds at a competition, they are also great for keeping cool in the summer months when temperatures in the gym are hot enough to boil an egg

Modern gi’s are normally made from single weave or the more modern pearl weave and will have a GSM of around 400, to help shave off those extra grams

The Gi’s are tapered and slim cut to help to break your opponent’s grip, however, the lightweight structure of the gi does tend to it stretching a bit

How To Choose The Best BJJ Gi

As you can see choosing the best BJJ gi for your needs can be a difficult procedure

Modern BJJ gi’s come with some many different weaves, cuts, sizes, materials and weights

When it comes to choosing the best jiu-jitsu Gi for yourself there are a few factors that need to be taken into consideration

Let’s go through some of the criteria you should be thinking about when choosing the right BJJ gi

BJJ Gi Weave

A Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gi has been described by many as the flashier cousin of the original Judo gi

How the fibres are weaved together can also determine how heavy a jiu-jitsu gi can be, so it’s also important to consider this into your decision

We will go through the best bjj gi weaves available on the market

Pearl Weave

Pearl Weave

While this is the newest weave on the market, it quickly became one of the most popular

Most modern Jiu-Jitsu gi’s will all be created using the peal weave cotton

This weave combines the lightweight properties of a single weave with the strength of the gold weave and why it’s one of the best jiu-jitsu gi weaves to use

Single Weave

Before the pearl weave cotton, came the single weave gi

Before this weave was invented this was the most popular weave for Jiu-Jitsu gis

A single weaves major benefit was it’s weight, many competition gi’s were made from single weave materials to help a fighter stay under the weight limit when they were close

Over time a single weave gi would become baggy and difficult to wear

Double Weave

Simply put this material was two single weaves weaved together

This doubled fabric added more weight to the gi, while creating a far more durable and difficult to grip jiu-jitsu kimono

Double Weave is used a lot in heavyweight gis, especially in Judo, where it’s perfect to withstand the gripping and aggressive pulling nature of the sport

A double weave gi rarely shrinks, so it’s important to get a gi that fights right otherwise it will inhibit movement since you don’t get the flexibility of other weaves

Gold Weave

The gold weave was designed when there was a need for something strong like a double weave but lighter and manoeuvrable like a single weave kimono

The gold weave was designed to take the best of both worlds from each weave and can be seen used is numerous competition gis

Many Olympic judo gi’s are made with gold weave as they are lighter and tougher than single weaves

However with these properties, comes a price tag, gold weave is probably one of the most expensive jiu-jitsu gi weaves and there’s a reason for that

With the evolution of the sport has also come the evolution of weaves

Companies have innovated to weaves to come up with their own unique twist of the standard kimono

New weaves coming onto the market include Do or Die’s Star Weave, which is a super durable and lightweight weave that doesn’t have the stretching properties

Other bjj gis that come onto the market include a honeycomb weave and Platinum Weave

BJJ Gi Pants Material

BJJ gis are more than the jacket however, there are also pants to consider

Normally Jiu-Jitsu Gi Pants won’t be made of a weave, this would be too uncomfortable but are made of more lightweight cotton material

Let’s take a look at the two most popular pants materials

The cotton drill material is a flat, strong, durable weave, which is most popular for jiu-jitsu pants and not used for jackets

This material can take lots of punishment that jiu-jitsu can throw at it

The cotton drill can be verified by its trademark diagonal material lines, however, the cotton drill is known for stretching during training, which is why a number of companies have moved away from it

Invented in the early 2000’s Ripstop quickly because a staple in Jiu-Jitsu training wear

Ripstop is very lightweight and while it can be 100% cotton, many manufacturers offer a polyester blend

Ripstop gets it’s name from the 05mm intervals of reinforcement threads, which give it it’s characteristic 3d square pattern

Ripstop doesn’t stretch during training and has very little shrinkage, so make sure you get a gi that is the right size, otherwise, it may be too baggy for training

Ripstop has also been used for gi jacket material due to it’s lightweight and strength

It’s the perfect travel companion for travelling jiu-jitsu practitioners

However Ripstop jacket gis is not IBJJF legal

BJJ Collar Material

Many modern BJJ Gi collars have a cotton, foam or rubber core, with rubber recently becoming the most popular

Over the years, there has been a recent shift in how Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi collars are made, normally the outside will be drill cotton or a ripstop material filled with cotton or foam to pad it out

However more and more gi’s are moving to rubber-filled collars due to hygiene and costing options

Cotton filled collars are comfortable but easy to grip, rubber collars are more difficult to grip but are more uncomfortable in the choke

So also think about the collar when you’re choosing the best Jiu-Jitsu Gi BJJ Gi Weight

For the competition, you can choose to get a lightweight gi, but there are also gi’s which are a more normal weight and also heavyweight gi’s designed for judo

Ultra Lightweight Competition Gi

Perfect for meeting competition weight limits

Lightweight means it’s perfect for summer and hot training

Normally made from Pearl Weave Cotton and Single Weave

Combines the benefits of the ultra-lightweight gi with the benefits of the middleweight gi

More durable than the ultra-lightweight

Very popular with competition

Normally made with Pearl Weave Cotton

Middleweight BJJ Gi

Perfect for regular training

Normally luxury-end gi’s

Heavyweight Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Gis

Doesn’t stretch like lightweight gis

Made from Double Weave or Gold Weave

All Jiu-jitsu gi brands can enhance our abilities or hinder them so make sure you pick the right gi for your needs

BJJ Gi Sizes

When you first look at how to size you BJJ gi, it can often be confusing

BJJ gi’s are often sizes using an alphanumeric system, with letters including A, F and M

F, represent female jiu-jitsu cuts and M stands for a child’s size

Many jiu-Jitsu companies have catered for intermediate sizes to help the practitioner choose their perfect fit

But how to do know if your gi is the right size?

When you buy a BJJ gi, you want to be looking for cuffs that are just slightly longer than your wrist

Over time the weaves will shrink and tighten with warm and hot washes, leaving you with a perfectly fitting gi

How to Shrink Jiu-Jitsu Gis

If you do buy a gi that is too big for you, there are a few things you can do to get it to the right size quickly and safely

Firstly, you should wash it on as hot as you can stand, normally gi’s can withstand hot washes of 90 degrees, however, keep an eye on any fixed nylon patches, which may not shrink and will spoil the effect of the gi

Once you have washed the gi, check the sleeve and skirt lengths on your body, if they are still too long you can then tumble dry your gi

Tumble dry the gi for 10 minutes at a time, taking it out and checking the size

BJJ Gi Colours and the IBJJF

These days Jiu-Jitsu Gi’s can come in a huge variety of colours, However, not all colours are competition

These days on the mats you’ll see plain white gi’s rolling with pink tie-dyed gi’s and camo colour kimonos

However most gi’s are sold in the competition regulated White, Blue and Black, these three are the only legal competition colours for the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation

Competition Legal BJJ Gi

In order to stop people gaming the system, the IBJJF set up a number of rules in order to make sure that all gi’s in competitions are deemed legal

Like Judo competition, the sleeve must reach the wrist of the fighter and the trousers must reach the ankles, tell that to the Miyao Brothers

Gi jackets must be made of cotton or a cotton hybrid weave and should not be too thick that it might stop your opponent from gripping it

For Juvenile adult and masters categories, gi jackets must be made from a woven fabric, where as trousers can be made from cotton twill or ripstop fabric

Collars must be made with EVA or a similar rubber fabric

The best jiu-jitsu gi should have a sleeve width that is wide enough to slip in 4 fingers easily without any resistance and the sleeve length should be no longer than 5cm away from the wrist when the arms are stretched out wide

Competition Gi’s should come in white, black or royal blue

Different colour trousers and jackets are not permitted, as well as Gis with contrasting coloured collars

1 Having something to hold onto while training makes everything slow down

Following the traditional guidelines of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as self-defence will mean fighting opponents with clothes on most the time

That means you have multiplied your ability and knowledge of attacking ten times by training in a Gi Some people have made the argument that a t-shirt does not hold up to choke someone

But how are you supposed to know what to do with the technique if you do not train it?

2 When you train in a Gi your defense has to start long before you are actually in trouble

I am not the best No Gi grappler on the planet but I do hold my own against guys my level just from mainly training in the Gi 3

I understand 99% of it is not wanting to lose and feel like you have to relearn or start over at the bottom but think of it this way, you can only go up from here

There is no pressure to walk out there and be the best right away

I have rolled with some great MMA fighters and convinced them to put on a Gi Gi’s change everything just like punching in MMA can change your effectiveness with your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a lot less ego and a lot more chilled – I have always appreciated the fine art of “fighting without fighting” – Bruce Lee I think Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is just that with my experience rolling with all types of people including Judo, Wrestling, MMA, Sambo and even Japanese Jiu-Jitsu

I can promise you will not feel as beat up rolling with a great Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner

No Gi jiu-jitsu can sometimes take away from the technique because you do not have to try as hard to escape

You will have something to show for it – It is not all about rank when you speak about training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu; it is simply about the knowledge that comes along with the rank

Then I met a guy that really put things into perspective for me by informing me that Gi Jiu-Jitsu no matter what academy you train has a ranking system that dates back many years ago

Respect your lineage and what it is to have a “ belt” It does not make sense for someone to say, “I am a black belt in No Gi jiu-jitsu”

<>What is the best Gi brand?

Personally, we think the best BJJ Gi on the list is the Tatami Fightwear Essentials Gi It’s the perfect combo of lightweight, durability and price

<>What BJJ Gi Colour is IBJJF Approved

If you compete in IBJJF competitions then you can only have three colours

White, Blue or Black, all other colours are banned under IBJJF rules

<>What does Gi mean in BJJ

The word ‘Gi’ is derived from the Japanese words ‘Keikogi’ or ‘dogi’ which means ‘uniform for training’

Gi or NoGi are two different styles under the same banner of BJJ

The market is full of some of the best bjj gis since the sport started, with so many to choose from you would be hard-pressed to find a kimono that will do you wrong

I write a lot about BJJ gis and I can tell you one thing: what’s the best BJJ gi for you completely depends on what you need

FAQ (which color gi to get, what’s my gi size, etc )

Top 3 best BJJ gis Overall

You asked what’s the best BJJ gi?

As I said it depends on what you want, so I’ll go into more details later

But here’s my general top 3 list for the best gis for BJJ

(You’ll see these come back in the different categories later as well )

The GoldBJJ Aeroweave is my favorite BJJ gi of all time

It’s 270 grams per square meter, which is ultra light

In fact it’s 22% lighter than other lightweight gis, and 40% lighter than normal gis

What’s awesome about lightweight gis is that they cool you off much better during training, which makes a big impact on your cardio (because nothing slows you down like overheating)

Lightweight gis are also much more comfortable

And you’ll thank yourself for getting a light gi when you need to make weight for your next competition

The Aeroweave is also very strong and durable due to reinforced stitching

I basically consider this to be one of the most premium BJJ gis ever made, and it’s really still very affordable

The Sanabul Essentials gi is the best selling BJJ gi on Amazon and has been for a few years

It’s hugely popular, especially among beginners and white belts

I dare to place a pretty high bet that multiple white belts at your gym train in this gi (and a few colored belts as well)

The reason for its popularity is simple: it’s extremely cheap and still good quality

(It’s not the absolute cheapest option, but it’s by far better value than the even cheaper ones )

I recommend this gi highly to all beginners, and I don’t blame colored belts who get it either

It’s just great value for the money

There are a few gi brands that you’ll see again and again in my lists, because they make great products

My 3 favorite BJJ gi brands are:

Best budget

The best BJJ gi for beginners

The best BJJ gi for beginners

A beginner at BJJ needs one gi that’s good enough

There’s no need to spend a fortune on a gi as a beginner, but you also shouldn’t blindly buy the cheapest option you see

Premium Beginner

The Gold BJJ Aeroweave is my all time favorite BJJ gi

I’ll admit that it’s a little on the high end side for a beginner

BUT if you already know that you want to keep doing jiu jitsu for a while, I think it makes sense to invest in a great BJJ gi and get one that will last you at least 2 years

best beginner gi

The Sanabul Essentials is the best BJJ gi for beginners

It’s also the most popular one by far – if you look around in your gym I bet you’ll see multiple white belts wear it

It’s just a great beginner gi because it’s very cheap, and although it’s thin, the quality is still solid (it will last you more than a year)

Basic BJJ Uniform

The Fuji BJJ Uniform is another great beginners gi

It’s ‘normal thickness’ for a BJJ gi, which makes it stronger than the Sanabul Essentials

This Fuji BJJ Uniform has been around forever (I actually bought this as my second gi back in the day) and is all a beginner needs

The Best BJJ gi for Competition

The Best BJJ gi for Competition

You need a gi that’s very strong, but also a light if you’re cutting weight, and those 2 things contradict each other a little bit

Here’s the 3 gis that I think best solve this dilemma:

The Gold BJJ Aeroweave is a strong ultra light gi (275 gsm, that’s 22% lighter than normal lightweight gis of 350 gsm)

This is ideal if you have to cut weight for your BJJ competition

Origin Comp DNA Atleta

Sanabul Core Competition gi

The Sanabul Core Competition gi is a great gi for your first BJJ competition

It’s stronger than Sanabul’s Essentials model but compared to other competition gis it’s still very affordable

Cheapest BJJ Gi

The Jayefo gi is the cheapest BJJ gi

I think the Sanabul Essentials is much better quality for just a few bucks extra

Best Budget BJJ Gi

The Sanabul Essentials is my favorite budget BJJ gi

It’s very good quality for how cheap it is, and it lasts just as long as some other more expensive gis that I had

Best Value BJJ Gi

The GoldBJJ Aeroweave is ultra light, strong and comfortable, and still pretty affordable

It’s actually my favorite gi of all time and I think it’s also the best value for your money

The Best BJJ gi for guys that are big, short, stocky, muscular or fat

It doesn’t matter, here’s my top 3 picks for guys that are big or stocky:

Affordable A6 BJJ gi

The FUJI BJJ Uniform is the most affordable BJJ gi that’s available in A6

FUJI gi’s also fit a little looser than other brands

So if you’re so big that you need an A6 gi, and you just want any basic gi, this is your best pick

Best for big guys

The Gold BJJ Aeroweave the best BJJ gi for most big guys

It’s premium quality for an affordable price

It comes in A4 and A5 (perfect for most big guys), and A0H, A1H, A2H and A3H which fits short, muscular, fat and stocky guys

Best A6 BJJ gi

The Origin Everest is the best A6 BJJ gi

The best BJJ gi for skinny, tall and lanky guys

(I’m Dutch, so it’s cultural heritage) It can be harder to find a gi if you’re lanky, but here’s my 3 favorite gis that either come in special ‘L’ (long) or even XL sizes

Best for Taller and skinnier guys

Origin DNA Comp

The Origin Comp DNA Atleta is available in A2L and A3L, and because it’s a competition gi it’s a slim fit cut

So this is a great option if you’re still a little too skinnt or tall for normal A2L and A3L BJJ gi’s

Best for Tall and skinny guys

The GoldBJJ Aeroweave is available in A2L and A3L which is enough for most tall and skinny guys

It’s a premium quality gi for a very affordable price, so I think it’s the best buy for most tall guys

Shop the Aeroweave gi on Amazon

Best for The Tallest guys

The Tatami Competitor gi is the best BJJ gi for the tallest and skinniest among us

The best lightweight BJJ gis

The best lightweight BJJ gis

Lightweight gis are my favorite

They’re super comfortable and breathable, which helps you cool off

I feel like I lose 20% of my cardio when I don’t wear a lightweight gi because I overheat (especially in summer)

And here’s my top 3 best lightweight BJJ gis:

The Sanabul Essentials is a great budget gi

Sanabul can make this gi so cheap because it’s quite thin (that’s how they save costs)

But the unexpected upside of this is that it’s also a great lightweight gi for hot weather

It’s a win win!

The Gold BJJ Aeroweave is the lightest BJJ gi ever made (275 gsm compared to 350 gsm) and due to the reinforced stiching it’s a lot stronger than the cheaper lightweight gis

And because it’s relatively affordable I always recommend it

The Fuji Suparaito is a lightweight gi of 350 gsm (grams per square meter)

It’s one of the most popular lightweight BJJ gis, and I’ve heard people say it’s more breathable than other lightweight models, but I can’t really tell the difference

Also read: Best Lightweight BJJ Gi For Competition, Hot Weather & Comfort

The most durable (heavy) BJJ gis

Heavy gis are super strong and durable

And they’re warmer which is nice when you train BJJ in winter

Here’s my 3 picks for heavyweight BJJ gis:

Origin gis are built in America, built to last

It’s 550 gsm, which is the heaviest gi I still consider practical for BJJ

So I think this is the most durable ‘real’ BJJ gi

So I think this is the most durable ‘real’ BJJ gi

The Tatami ‘The Tank’ is 950 gsm which is ridiculously heavy for BJJ (it’s better for Judo)

I don’t recommend you buy such a heavy gi because it’s stiff and limits your movement, but if you really want the most durable gi, this is it

The best women’s BJJ gis

The best women’s BJJ gis

When I started Brazilian jiu jitsu women trained in A0 men’s gis… Fortunately, there’s plenty of real women’s BJJ gis available now

The Sanabul Essentials BJJ gi for women is the cheapest women’s gi that’s still good enough quality

It’s a great option for when you’re just starting with Brazilian jiu jitsu or are on a tight budget

Best women’s gi

The Gold BJJ Aeroweave is my favorite BJJ gi because it’s an affordable, high quality lightweight women’s gi

It’s available in a separate women’s cut and it’s very comfortable

It’s equally high quality as the Aeroweave but it’s medium weight, which makes it more durable and a great all around gi

What to look out for in a Brazilian jiu jitsu gi?

When it comes to purchasing a Brazilian jiu jitsu gi, there are several things to consider

Size: One of the most important things to look for is the right size

If the gi is too small or too big, it can affect your ability to move comfortably and perform techniques effectively

Look for gis that are made of soft, breathable materials that allow for a full range of movement

Brand: Choosing a reputable brand can give you some assurance about the quality of the gi you’re purchasing

Look for brands that are well-known in the BJJ gear market

Weave: Gis come in different weaves, which refers to the type of material and how it’s woven

Single weave is the lightest and least expensive, while gold weave is heavier and more durable

You could even combine a gold weave jacket with single weave cotton pants for a combination of durability and lightness

Fit: Different gis will fit differently, so it’s important to try them on and find one that fits well

The sleeves and pants should be the right length, and the collar should fit snugly without being too tight

Cost: Gis can vary in price, and some can be quite expensive

It’s important to find a gi that fits your budget while still meeting your needs

Try on different gis and see which one feels right for you

Overall, when shopping for a Brazilian jiu jitsu gi, it’s important to take some time to do your research and find something that meets your needs and preferences

With so many options on the market, you’re sure to find the perfect gi for you

BJJ Gi Buyer’s Guide: Frequently Asked questions

By now I hope you know which BJJ gi you want to buy

What BJJ gi should I buy?

What BJJ gi should I buy?

What BJJ gi should I buy?

What BJJ gi should I buy?

What BJJ gi should I buy?

What BJJ gi you should buy depends on your needs

If you want a really good BJJ gi that’s pretty affordable, I recommend the Gold BJJ Aeroweave

If you want a very high quality gi I recommend an Origin gi

And if you want any gi that’s good enough I recommend the Sanabul Essentials

A good jiu jitsu gi costs around $100

A good jiu jitsu gi costs around $100

You can get a good enough jiu jitsu gi for around $60, and you can get a really good BJJ gi for $120

How do you pick a jiu jitsu gi?

To pick a jiu jitsu gi you ask yourself what you want from the gi

Do you want a lightweight or heavyweight gi, which color do you want, is it for training and competition, which size, and so on

Once you know what you want it’s easy to choose the right gi for you

What makes a gi good?

What makes a gi good is the quality of the material, the weave, the reinforced stitching and the design

A good BJJ uses more or stronger material and extra stitching in important areas to become more durable

And a good gi will look better (you’ll know this when you see it)

Which color should my BJJ gi be?

Your first BJJ gi should be white, and your gis after that can be of different colors/ Note that the color of a BJJ gi actually has no formal meaning (unlike belt color), so you can get whichever you like

BUT, some gis only allow white gis, and most tournaments only allow white, blue and black gisAlso read: What color bjj gi should I get?

You know your BJJ gi size because you read the gi size chart of the gi you’re going to buy

It’s important to read exactly that chart, because the charts can differ a little bit across different gi brands and models

And if you want a general indication of your gi size you can use my gi size calculatorAlso read: The Complete BJJ Gi Size Guide | Gi Size Calculator & 3 Gi Size Charts

How should a BJJ gi fit?

A BJJ gi should fit comfortably

It should fit tight enough to not be baggy, but it shouldn’t impede your movement while you do jiu jitsu movementsAlso read: How Should a BJJ Gi Fit?

Can I use a Judo gi for BJJ?

Yes, you can use a judo gi for BJJ

But it’s not ideal, because judo gis are made different

They’re heavier and more loose fitting, which is great for standup but worse for on the groundAlso read: BJJ Gi Vs Judo Gi | 6 Secret Differences To Love

Can I use a karate gi for BJJ?

No, you can’t use a karate gi for BJJ

Karate gis are too thin for grappling sports (as they should be because in Karate you have to be as fast as possible)

You need a real BJJ gi for BJJAlso read: BJJ Gi Vs Karate Gi | 7 Secret Differences To Love

Some tournaments actually require that you don’t wear anything under your gi

How long does a BJj gi last?

A BJJ lasts about 1 to 3 years, depending on its quality, how often you wear it and how you wash it

It lasts longer if you get a thicker or more premium gi and wash it on a low temperature and hang dry it

Can a white belt wear a black gi?

Yes, a white belt can wear a black gi

The gi color actually doesn’t mean anything in BJJ, so it’s not like only black belts can wear black gis

Can a white belt wear a blue gi?

Yes, a white belt can wear a blue gi in BJJ

BJJ doesn’t attach any meaning to the color of the gi, only to the color of the belt

Do I need to buy my own gi for BJJ?

Yes, eventually you need to buy your own gi for BJJ

But if you’re just taking a trial class you can usually borrow a gi at the academy, or train for once in normal sports clothes

How many BJJ gis should I own?

You should own 1, 2 or 3 gis depending on how often you train and your climate

If you train multiple days in a row you need more than 1 gi because you need time to wash your gi in between classes

And if you live in a cold climate it takes more than 1 day to hang dry your gi, so then you need 3 gis or more
