If you’re like most people, the weight of your car is probably something you rarely think about
However, knowing the weight of your car can be very useful if you plan to tow it or drive over a weak bridge
Weighing your car can also help you make decisions about modifications and other changes
But how much does your car really weigh?
And what factors affect the car’s weight?
In this blog post, we’ll look at the average car weight by type and model, and discuss some of the reasons why you might find different weights on your car’s specs
We also look at where you can find the weight of your car without weighing it on a scale
The average car weighs 4,094 pounds, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency
The average small car (eg Nissan Micra) weighs 2,600 pounds, while the average large car (eg Audi A8) weighs 4,400 pounds
Average car weights have generally decreased over time, although newer models are larger than average
One of the reasons why cars weigh less than a few decades ago is that newer car models are designed to be as light as possible
Lighter weight reduces the force required to stop and start, improving safety and handling
It also means that the car’s engine does not have to work as hard to move the vehicle, which reduces fuel consumption
There are cars of all sizes and shapes
Although the cars are built from different materials and in different ways, they usually average the same center of gravity in the same type series
Here are some average weights for the most common car types on the market:

Various car weights
If you look up your car’s weight information in your owner’s manual or search by VIN, you may notice that you see many different weights, so which one should you be looking at and what do all these different weights mean?
Here are the most common types of weights and a brief explanation of them:
Tare weight: Weight without driver, passengers or cargo
Gross weight: The weight of the car with the maximum load loaded and the driver and all passengers
Gross Combined Weight: This is the unit you need to consider if you have a trailer
The combined weight of the trailer and the car
Payload: the weight of the car, cargo, passengers (gross weight) and everything you tow behind the car
Gross Weight: The maximum total weight your car can support with driver, passengers and cargo
Total Axle Weight: The weight load on each axle of your car
Maximum Trailer Weight: Very similar to combined gross price
But this also includes the weight of a fully loaded trailer
Total Axle Weight: The maximum weight that one axle on your car can support

So if you couldn’t find your car model in the list above, there are even better ways to find it without weighing it on a scale
Here are some easy ways to find your car’s weight quickly with accurate results
The easiest and fastest way to find out the weight of your car is probably a VIN decoder or search
VIN decoders are available in paid or free versions
We have a free VIN decoder here at Mechanicbase and you can use it as many times as you like
The VIN code can be found in several different places in your car
Many car models also have a sticker with the VIN code around the area where the car door lock is locked
If you can’t find it there, you can try looking for the sticker in the engine compartment, often in front of the engine
The owner’s manual that came with you when you bought the car is another good place to find out the weight of your car
The owner’s manual is often in the glove box, so if you still have your car’s manual, look there for your car’s weight
Finding the weight of your car on Wikipedia is also an easy option because most car models are there with specifications
But the disadvantage of this method is that there are so many different types of cars available with different engines and other accessories, so you may not find the right result
However, if you don’t need to find the exact weight, but just need a rough idea of the weight, it can be a good option
Almost all car models have a sticker with the VIN code and other information such as tire pressure, tire size and car weight
This sticker is often found on the body of your car behind the driver’s door
Open the driver’s door and check if there is a sticker near the central locking
If you have your registration number or VIN, you can call your authorized dealer and ask them if they can find the specifications for your specific car model
Of course, the best way to get the exact weight of your car is to weigh it on a scale
But finding a scale big enough to weigh a car is probably easier said than done
If you really want to weigh your car on a scale, you can often find them at car scrap yards and inspection centers
Weighing the car on a scale may be necessary if there are several heavy accessories installed in the car, such as a large sound system or a dog crate
The weight of this small car is 2018 lbs or 917 kg
There are lighter cars, but not if you’re looking for a new purchase fresh from the factory
The Ford F450 Super Duty Crew Cab is the heaviest car you can buy if you’re looking for a modern car in the US market
This Ford weighs 8600 lbs or 3900 kg
The average weight of the car in kg is 1857 kg
The average weight of a small car (eg Nissan Micra) in kilograms is 1200 kg and the average weight of a large car (eg Audi A8) is 2000 kg
In addition, increasing the weight of each axle increases stability when braking, which also increases safety
