What I always found effective was showing the guys the height and weight of the players at their positions in the NFL.
This has helped give many players the extra motivation they need to gain weight when they can compare themselves to the guys at the next level.
(Sometimes it was an obvious check on defensive ends who thought 210 pounds was “big enough” to play in, say, the NFL.)
I took the 53 active roster for the 2022 season (last week of the season – January 2023), totaling about 1,700 players, and divided them by position.
For this guide, I took the average height and weight of 84 active quarterbacks around the league.
Also, just for fun, I’ve also listed the tallest, shortest, heaviest, and lightest quarters.
Average height of an NFL quarterback
The average height of an NFL quarterback is 74.56 inches, or about 6’2 1/2.
Average weight of an NFL quarterback
The average weight of an NFL quarterback is 219.8 pounds.
Who are the tallest quarterbacks in the NFL?
Here are the five tallest quarterbacks in the NFL in 2023, all of whom are 6’6″.
Joe Flacco – Jets
Nick Foles – Colts
Who are the shortest quarterbacks in the NFL?
If you’re under 6 feet tall, it’s tough to play quarterback in the NFL.
Only two quarterbacks in 2023 fell into that category, both listed at 5’11”.
Who are the heaviest quarterbacks in the NFL?
Not surprisingly, the two heaviest midfielders are also the tallest.
Joe Flacco – 245 pounds – Jets
Nick Foles – 243 pounds – Colts
Dak Prescott – 238 pounds – Cowboys
Josh Allen – 237 pounds – Bills
Carson Wentz – 237 pounds – Commanders
Who are the best quarterbacks in the NFL?
In 2023, no quarterback in the NFL weighed under 200 pounds.
Here are five of the lightest.
John Woolford – 200 pounds – Rams
Logan Woodside – 201 pounds – Falcons
Trace McSorley – 202 pounds – Cardinals
Brett Rypien – 202 pounds – Broncos
Tyler Huntley – 204 pounds – Ravens
Final thoughts
While most of us usually imagine that all NFL quarterbacks are 6’4″ (or taller), that’s not the case.
In 2023, only 24 out of 84 active quarterbacks (28.6%) were 6’4″ or taller.
While not many would argue that being tall is an advantage at the position, there are plenty of guys around 6 feet currently playing at the highest level.
