New IGFA World Record Halibut: Largest Ever

Of all the species that are out there, the Pacific lobster is the largest of all

Catching one of these big fish is something that many anglers hope to do and some have actually managed to catch some really giant flounder over the years

In this article, we take a look at the story behind the IGFA current world record breaker as well as some of the other monster breakers that feature in the books as well

IGFA All-Tackle World Record Halibut

On June 11, 1996, Jack Tragis was fishing on the bottom of Dutch Harbor, Alaska, USA

This outing took the biggest hit and earned its place in the record books

For the record-breaking draft time, Jack Shakespeare used a sturdy stick rod, a Senator Penn 4/0 reel, Aimer line, and a modified big ugly

Before landing the world record lobster, Jack and his fishing buddies had already landed several lobsters (although these were much smaller) and prepared to head to the beach after spending the day fishing in waters that were about 200 feet deep

The last throw of the day was Jack’s successful catch of a record-breaking 459 pounds

It took two hours of fighting Jack before he bought the fish in the small boat that he and his friends would use for the day

This large rhombus was over eight feet long and five feet wide

Jack’s catch didn’t just set a new record, it actually beat that previous record by nearly 20 pounds

Prior to Jack’s release of his giant Pacific salmon, the largest ever caught was a 440-pound fish that had been caught in 1978

This one century is remembered as a long time for anyone to even approach, let alone attempt to break

Atlantic Halibut All Tackle Record

Thomas was able to submit all the details the IGFA needed to confirm his catch as the new record for the largest Atlantic halibut ever caught

On July 28, 2004, Englishman Thomas Nielsen set a new world record for Atlantic halibut when he landed a large halibut at an impressive 418 pounds, 13 inches

Thomas caught a record breaking fish in the Vannaya Troms, Norway bait fishery

He used a Shimano rod, Shimano reel, and Dyneema line with a fish hook

It took Thomas more than an hour of fighting to successfully land the fish but once he did, he was able to submit all the necessary details to the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) who eventually confirmed his catch as a new record the largest Atlantic lobster ever caught

California Halibut All Tackle Record

Rivera was fishing in Santa Rosa Island, California, USA on July 2011 when he landed a 67 pound 5 ounce California lobster that set a new record for the largest fish of this species ever caught

In addition to fishing gear, Francisco fishes on the farm using live squid bait

On the Key Halibut Species

If you’re looking for Atlantic lobster in the US, the most common ones are in Maine Bay

California lobster is found most south of San Francisco

Males of the pacific roe are generally smaller than the females of the species

Although not all of them will grow to a very large size, these species can sometimes reach barn doors as some fish can grow to five hundred pounds and more than eight feet in length

The Atlantic whelk has a fairly slow growth rate so their true size is not always commonly seen

Although usually under eight feet in length, these fish are thought to be able to grow up to 15 feet

The California lobster can live up to 30 years and can grow up to five feet in length and up to 72 pounds

One key thing to remember when fishing for lobster is to be patient and wait a little while after any lobster hits your line

Ideally, you might want to let the fish take your bait before you set the hook

A circle hook tends to work well for fishing for lobsters so it can be useful in addition to your fishing gear

Another thing to keep in mind is that a large bait can lead to some large lobster being caught
