The 10 Heaviest Living Fish in the World

These swimming vertebrates all appear to have fins and gills, but not always in the same place or on the same type of skin; in fact, there are over 25,000 species of fish worldwide and the list is always growing.

From that list there are some fish that are fast, some that are small, and some that are so big that they eat all the other fish in the sea!

These are the top ten largest fish and their average fully grown body weights…

Top 10 heaviest live fish in the world

reef stingray

10 – Reef blanket – Average mass: 1.4 Tons

This may be the first Ray on this list, but it certainly isn’t the last.

Growing up to 11 feet wide, they certainly spread their weight and look eerily peaceful and graceful in the subtropical waters they roost in.

9 – Beluga Sturgeon – Average mass: 1.57 Tons

8 – Hoodwinker sunfish – Average mass: 1.87 Tons

Believe it or not, this giant fish was only discovered in 2017!!!

Known to be yet another type of Mola fish, it just goes to show that anything can still be out there in our seas and oceans.

7 – Spring Sharptail – Average Mass: 2 Tons

If it looks familiar, that’s because it’s also a species of Mola fish (half-fish shape), much like ocean sunfish.

The biggest difference is that the Sharptail mola has a short tale and the Ocean sunfish does not.

ocean sunfish

6 – Ocean sunfish – Average mass: 2.3 Tons

Said to be the heaviest bony fish in the world, they are often as tall as they are wide, mostly desiring to eat jellyfish as they swim past them.

Despite their gigantic size, they are not a threat to humans and most other fish unless they get very close to their mouths.

giant ocean manta ray

5 – Giant ocean blanket – Average mass: 3 Tons

It is, of course, the largest Ray fish in the world and can grow up to 23 feet wide!

4 – Tiger shark – Average mass: 3.11 Tons

It is also known to kill more humans each year than all tiger species known to man.

3 – Great white shark – Average mass: 3.32 Tons

If you’ve seen the movie “Jaws” by Steven Spielberg, you’ll know all about this shark.

Of course, he doesn’t go out of his way to eat us humans like he did in the movie, but he’s been known to do so.

basking shark

2 – Basking shark – Average mass: 19 Tons

It may be a giant shark, but it mainly eats plankton, making it one of only 3 plankton-eating sharks in the world.

It gets its name from the way it can often be seen feeding on the surface of the water, as if basking in the sun, just like we humans do on the most amazing beaches in the world.

1 – Whale shark – Average mass: 21.5 Tons

It might not be the fastest of sharks, but this fishy beast is said to have been around for 60 million years, so it’s as close to being a living dinosaur as you’re likely to get.
