Some of these breeds are very small, but others are substantial
Most large horses are draft horses
In other words, they’re bred to pull heavy equipment and supplies
Most of them are not riding horses — they’re too large

The Shire horse is easily the largest horse in the world
They range from 17 to 19 hands tall and can weigh up to 2,400 pounds
They were selectively bred to be large for farm and industrial work
In the past, this breed towed barges, pulled carts, and handled heavy plows
They’re used for both farm and industrial work
However, because most farms are mechanized these days, these horses are nearing extinction
Their numbers continue to lower, as many don’t want to keep large horses unless they have a practical need for them

This horse is a bit better known than the Shire Horse
They are somewhere between 16 to 18 hands high and weigh between 1,800 to 2,000 pounds
The famous Budweiser Clydesdale horses are usually at least 18 hands high and weigh up to 2,300 pounds
King LeGear is perhaps the biggest Clydesdale around, standing at a high 205 hands high
He weighed 2,950 pounds, which is bigger than a Shire Horse
These horses are known for their energetic nature
This is mostly due to their large size, which makes them somewhat challenging to keep
This is an ancient breed
There is no record of when the Clydesdale horse began

The Belgian Draft didn’t develop as its own breed until after World War II
The Belgian Draft is taller than most horses, but it is also lighter
This means it can’t carry as heavy of a load as other draft horses on this list, though it is still considered a heavy horse
They usually weigh around 2,000 pounds and stand around 165 hands high
With their heavy weight, these horses are also capable of pulling heavy loads
Two Belgian Drafts were recorded to pull 17,000 pounds
Today, these horses are most common in heavy farm work and forestry
However, they are still useful as riding horses
This is one of the few draft breeds that are not on the edge of extinction
They are generally shorter than most other draft breeds, but this breed still has some pretty giant horses
The most well-known Belgian Draft was named Brooklyn Supreme
This horse stood 192 hands tall and weighed over 3,000 pounds

The Dutch Draft is a newer breed of horse
They didn’t appear until after World War I, in which Ardennes and Belgian Draft horses were commonly bred together
This led to a whole new breed of horse – the Dutch Draft
This breed is quite heavyset
It became popular in Zeeland and Groningen, mostly for farm work and similar heavy-pulling jobs
However, it didn’t have much time to become popular until World War II, where it suffered heavy losses and became a rarer breed
This is likely one of the strongest horse breeds
Despite this, they are much smaller than some of the other draft horses
Still, they are much larger than most other breeds out there
This horse breed is a giant conglomeration of other horse breeds on this list
They are basically a hybrid, with the genetics of Clydesdales, Percherons, Shires, and Suffolk Punches all wrapped up in this one breed
They didn’t become their own breed until 1976 when they started their studbook
To make the horse suitable for this country, many large horses were used
Eventually, this led to a new breed
This horse is famous throughout Australia, where it is the dominant draft breed
Many are not registered, so the exact number of horses around today is challenging to figure out
This horse is relatively large, though it is smaller than many of its ancestors
It can stand between 162 and 172 hands high and weighs between 1,300 to 1,900 pounds

This breed first popped up in Iowa during the early 20th century
The breed struggled to get traction during the Great Depression

Since farming has become mechanized, this breed has fallen out of popularity
The breed has been growing steadily since then, though they are still considered to be critical
9 Russian Heavy Draft/Ardennes
The Russian Heavy Draft is a Russian horse breed
It was bred originally in Imperial Russia during the second half of the 19th century
This breed is one of several draft breeds that were being developed at the time
However, it is an older breed in general and is smaller than most other draft breeds around today
This little horse is quite powerful for its size
In some countries, the horse is also raised for meat
This draught horse was created during the 19th and 20th centuries
They are used most for heavy draft work, as you could probably guess
Currently, the breed is near extinction
This horse usually stands around 15 to 16 hands high
They are not as large as some other breeds on this list, though they are still decently powerful
They come in various colors as well, including bay, chestnut, black, grey, and roan
Soviet Heavy Draft
This horse was initially derived from the Belgian Brabant and was developed for heavy labor and agricultural work in the Soviet Union
It was recognized as a breed in 1952
This is one of several breeds that were all developed simultaneously, including the Russian Heavy Draft, which is often confused with this horse
The Soviet Heavy Draft is known to be massive with a free-moving gait
They were mostly used for draft work in agriculture, though they are sometimes seen in industrial work
I often get asked, “How much do horses weigh,” my smart retort is usually, “how long is a string” To meaningfully answer, we need to know the horses’ breed category

However, other factors besides weight separate these horses

There are three primary types of horse blood: cold blood, warm blood, and hot blood
Each type is classified by its weight and use
Cold bloods are the largest horses, followed by warmbloods, who are, in turn, larger than hot bloods
The difference between these types of horses is their size and use
Through selective breeding, specific characteristics were developed in a group of horses
Heavy horses are often referred to as cold-blooded or draft horses

Knowing your horse’s weight is important for many reasons, including calculating the correct dosage of medication or feed and ensuring that your horse is healthy and at a healthy weight
By weighing your horse, you can determine if it is underweight or overweight
This allows you to take the necessary steps to get put weight on your horse and get it back on track
Horses that are very old or at an advanced age may become frail and start losing muscle tone and bone mass, which can lead to serious health problems, including broken bones, colic, laminitis, and founder (laminitis), and death in extreme cases
It is important for older horses, especially those with arthritis or other physical ailments such as chronic pain from injuries sustained during hard work like dressage training/competing, etcetera to not become obese
How to weigh your horse
Do you know how much your horse weighs?
If not, you should start tracking his weight
Horse owners everywhere can attest to the importance of keeping track of their horse’s weight
There are a few different ways to weigh your horse
One of the most common methods is using weight tape
If you use a trailer scale, first place the trailer over the empty scale and note the amount, then load your horse and weigh the trailer again
The difference is your horse’s weight
If you’re using weight tape, wrap it around your horse’s barrel and note where the zero mark falls
This is his weight in pounds
You should weigh your horse at least once a month to track his progress and ensure he is not losing or gaining weight
If you notice any changes in his weight, be sure to consult with your veterinarian
Losing or gaining too much weight can be dangerous for horses, so monitoring their health closely is important
Weighing your horse is an easy way to keep tabs on his well-being and ensure he stays healthy
Another way to weigh your horse is by doing horse weight calculations by measuring the body length and girth
This calculation is more accurate for horses than the standard weigh tape method
To do this, you will need a measuring tape to determine your horse’s body length and girth
heart girth x heart girth x body length divided by 300=Weight in PoundsAdult Horse

How to determine your horse’s healthy weight?
Horses are individuals; however, there is a baseline test to determine your horse’s healthy weight; it’s called the Henneke Equine Body Condition Scoring System (BCS)
The BCS is a useful guideline designed to evaluate the health and well-being of horses
The Henneke Equine Body Condition Scoring System takes away the guesswork when evaluating a horse’s weight by assigning a numerical value to the quantity and area of fat on horses
The sections of the horse evaluated are the loins, ribs, tailhead, withers, neck, and shoulders
After checking each location, a number is given based on the amount of fat, and the figures are totaled to give a rating based on your evaluation of the animal
The BCS system scale ranks horses from 1 to 9, a rating of 1 is the lowest, and horses with this score are deemed emaciated
Body condition scores from 4 to 6 fall into the acceptable range for any horse breed
BCS scores from 7 to 9 indicate a horse is overweight to obese
Most overweight horses have significant health issues
A horse with a score of 4 is considered moderately thin; most moderately thin horses have a crease along their back, and a faint outline of ribs is noticeable
A horse with a score of 5 is deemed moderate it has a level back, and its ribs can be felt but not seen easily
The fat around its tailhead is slightly spongy, the withers are rounded, and the shoulders and neck blend smoothly into its body
These parameters should place a horse in the average weight category for its breed
Horses that score six on the BCS scale are classified as moderately fleshy and have a slight crease down their back, and the fat on the tailhead is soft

The number of Suffolk Punch horses began to dwindle in the late 1940s, and by the 1950s, the breed had come perilously close to extinction
Despite this, the Suffolk remains a unique and beloved breed, celebrated for its power, strength, and unwavering dedication to hard work
Today there are so few Suffolk horses that they are listed as “Critical” on the American Livestock Breeds Conservatory

For example, Percherons have more energy, and Clydesdales are considered hotter than Belgians but still calm in comparison to other smaller breeds
