Most companies will claim that providing temperature ratings isn’t possibleAnd they’re not incorrect
Not to even mention the subjective nature of the feeling of warmth
It is possible to provide approximate values for an average person making some strict assumptions around layering and weather conditions

Understanding the Working Principle of Down Insulated JacketsDown quality and down amount are the two most important things when it comes to the ultimate warmth provided by any down insulated garment
You’ll mostly come across this as fill power and fill weight respectively
Fill PowerFill Power represents the fully expanded, end volume of a 1 oz down (goose or duck)
For example, a 800 FP (fill power) down will end up getting 800 cubic inches when it’s fully expanded
How and why does a higher FP down offers higher warmth?Because the insulation occurs by trapping air within the vacant spots of down, followed by having that air heated using our body heat as the source
So, the higher the volume of trapped air (which is directly proportional with Fill Power), the more air will be heated & work as insulation as a result
In the end, you’ll feel warmer inside the jacket you’re wearing
This number varies anywhere from 500 to 1000, although the majority of quality brands (such as Arc’teryx, Patagonia, Feathered Friends, Outdoor Research, Marmot, REI Co-op, Enlightened Equipment, Rab, Black Diamond, Mountain Equipment and Mountain Hardwear)mostly use down between 650 FP and 850 FP
Now before we get to fill weight, speaking of fill powerwarmth actually isn’t the only thing that it affects
Other roles of fill powerIt has additional three important roles: Loft retention during movement: Higher FP down will retain its loft with minimal loss during movement
Higher impact on end warmth: Compared to FW (fill weight), FP has a larger impact on the warmth the insulated jacket provides
For the sake of minimizing confusion and keeping this as clear as possible, equal weights of importance are placed on fill power and fill weight when calculating FP * FW values (which you’ll come across as you read on)
although these effects has been included when calculating the temperature ratings of jackets within their first year
After all, FP * FW is not the only factor considered while laying out the temperature ratings
Tens of parameters are assessed, and the values put together at the end are the final results, including the few extra effects of fill power
Durability of insulation capability A jacket with a higher FP down minimizes its loss of insulating power over time
You’d be able to use a 850 FP down jacket for decades, and it’d feel almost just as warm as the first day you put it on
A jacket with a lower FP down, on the other hand, might not and probably will not prove nearly as durable
In our experiences, jackets equipped with 650 FP down are more likely to feel noticeably colder after, say, 2-3 years
If you, on the other hand, are not planning to use your jacket for more than a few years, then this might not be that important to you after all
By the time it starts to lose its insulating power noticeably, you’ll have gotten yourself a new piece anyway
Compressibility: A jacket with a higher FP down will offer a smaller packed size

Fill WeightFill weight is the total amount of down the jacket is equipped with
Some other resources might claim that fill weight is much less important than fill power when it comes to warmth, but that’s far from realityIn terms of warmth, fill weight is very, very important
Almost (in some conditions it even is) just as important as fill power
Because, just like fill power, fill weight also directly affects the total amount of air trapped within the vacant spots of down
As explained earlier, fill power and fill weight are the two most important factors when it comes to warmth
In many cases, on a larger scale, assuming both jackets are equipped with the same amount of equally capable synthetic insulation, it is possible to make very close estimations by multiplying them when comparing warmth ratings of two different pieces
For exampleArc’teryx Cerium SV offers 162 grams of 850 FP down
105*900 = 137,700Rab Positron Pro offers 300 grams of 800 FP down
One point should be made in here is that although the Positron will come warmer, thanks to the higher FP down of Cerium SV: it’ll stay almost equally warm even after decades, it won’t lose its insulation during movement, and it’s quite a bit compressible
What do you mean by smaller scale?Comparing two jackets with, say, 140,000 and 100,000 FP * FW values
Understanding the Working Principle of Synthetic Insulated JacketsSynthetic insulated jackets imitate the working principle of down insulated jackets
They’re equipped with artificial insulators, rather than natural down obtained by geese and ducksSome examples to the names of these artificial insulators can be given as Coreloft and PlumaFill
Comparing the temperature ratings of synthetic insulated jackets is more difficult
Because, unlike fill power parameter in down jackets, there isn’t a common denominator to compare different types of synthetic insulators in an analytical way
CLO valuesCLO value is the insulation power of an insulation settingFor example, this value is 092 for 1 oz (2835 grams) of a dry PrimaLoft One for one square yard
The important thing here is that unlike fill power, CLO is not a characteristic that is unique to one ounce of the materialAs you see in the example above, it isn’t independent from the area of insulation (square yards)
So, a higher CLO actually points out to the insulation capability of an insulation setting as a whole
Given the right amount of thickness, any insulator can achieve desired CLO value
So, metaphorically, you can think of CLO value in synthetic insulated jackets as FP * FW value in down insulated jackets

We can (and we do) use a made-up parameter to CLO/oz/yd² to replicate FP in down jackets
A quick recap here: As you see, synthetic insulators lose minimal insulating power when they get wet
A fair amount of manufacturers come up with their unique insulators – such as Coreloft, PlumaFill, Octa, Stratus, FullRange, etc
And just like CLO values, they’re unwilling to reveal the CLO/oz/yd² values of their insulators too
I asked Arc’teryx and Patagonia Customer Services myself about this, and came back empty handed
During my research, I did come across some useful information that I can leverage
For example, as it turns out, the CLO/oz/yd² value for PrimaLoft One is 092
Fortunately, this calculation using the numerical value CLO was not the only information I had in my hands
Warmth EvaluationSo, in the end, I used at least two of these three items to estimate the overall temperature rating of an insulated jacket: Analyzed them scientifically (as explained earlier), Trying them out myself when I can, And/or gathering offline user experience
In addition to insulation types and amounts (which is what I covered so far), there are also other factors that impact the warmth of an insulated jacket
Other factorsLet’s talk about the most important and most common examples of these factorsIn most cases, these are considered minor next to insulation specific qualities
But they do have a noticeable effect, and combined together, they might come close to affect the warmth as much as the insulator capability and amount

Baggier cut of Cerium SV helps with its incredible warmth
Briefly, the amount of trapped air increases as the jacket gets baggier
So more air works as insulation, and ultimately you’re kept warmer
After some point, more inner volume only holds the warmth back
LengthThis has two effectsFirst one is that the amount of trapped air, which is explained aboveAnd second, in colder weather, it becomes much harder to warm your legs and feet than your torso and arms
This is why a jacket with a longer hem length will feel warmer
Outer fabric Outer fabric is actually much more about weather resistance, but it also affects warmth a little bit
As explained earlier, no down jacket is able to offer top notch weather resistance since they get clumped and lose their loft when they get wet
Some products offer a more fragile face fabric, while others can bead water more efficiently
These are directly proportional to face quality and DWR coating
It stands for Durable Water Repellent – which means that water will be repelled under wet conditions instead of soaking into the fabric
It’s a good thing these jackets are coated in DWR, but pay attention to the fact that DWR is a coating – meaning that it will wear off over time
As you see, there’s a strong correlation between FP x FW and temperature ratings, but not more than, say, 80%
For face fabrics, I’d list them like this: Perfex Quantum Pro = Arato 30 > Perfex Quantum > Arato 10 = Drilite Loft 40D > Arato 7 = Drilite Loft 20D > others
For synthetic jackets, outer fabric affects the warmth noticeably less
Fill distributionSome products of my favorite brand Arc’teryx are guilty of this
Take Firebee AR (read my review), for example
Nothing is wrong with the insulation at the back, collar and torso
Whereas the insulation in arms, especially in lower arms, are seemingly slightly inadequate, which in the end affects the warmth feeling a little bit
ReinforcementsSome (most?) down jackets are reinforced with synthetic insulation in strategical locations
More often than not, these are high wear areas such as shoulders, back, elbows, etcFor the sake of simplicity, I don’t list them in my tables – although I do take them into consideration when evaluating the end warmth of a jacket
This is why you can see a jacket with smaller FP x FW rating outscoring a jacket with higher FP x FW rating
Because the former is equipped with (more) synthetic insulation reinforcements
Results: Temperature RatingsDown jackets lose insulating power noticeably when it gets wet

Yes, all puffer jackets are warm but the degree of warmth a puffer jacket can provide varies significantly depending on the insulation used, design, weight, fill power, and the technology used in it
I don’t know why puffer jacket is most commonly interchanged with down jackets because according to my research and experience puffer jacket can also be made of synthetic insulation
And, not all down puffer jackets or synthetic puffer jackets provide an equal amount of warmth
Let’s address the factors that determine the warmth of a puffer jacket so the next time you can make the most out of your bucks

As addressed, puffer jackets are referred to as down jackets which in my opinion misleads the consumers that’s why don’t think the puffer jacket that you’re going to buy will be made of down every single time
Let’s get into the depth of the possible insulation available in all puffer jackets with all scientific explanations to literate you which insulation renders the best warmth from mild to severe cold temperature
Down Insulation
The down insulation is nature’s best thermal insulation given to birds but humans are clever enough to use it for their own sake while not thinking about the birds like geese and ducks from where we get it
Now there is a misconception that a down jacket means it is filled with duck or geese feathers but it is not the feathers that make the insulation works
Overall, it’s a very complicated structure that keeps the puffier down jackets warm and the science behind this is still to be achieved by synthetic insulation
Now, the amount of warmth a puffer down jacket can provide depends upon the down cluster that traps the heat and the greater the loft is the better insulative properties it will have
In modern terminology, Fill power is used to measure the loft
So the higher the fill power of a puffer jacket is the more insulative and lightweight it will be
Also, it will demonstrate better warmth to weight ratio as compared to lower fill power down
Commercially, down jackets can come from anywhere between 300 to 900 fill power
Fill power is measured by calculating how many cubic inches a down will take when we allow it to expand fully
For example, a 500 fill power down will take 500 cubic inches of space per ounce
Similarly, if one ounce of down takes 700 cubic inches it will have 700 power
The same goes for the 900 – highest fill power down available in the market
Please see on the product description, if the puffer jacket is claiming to have duck down then it simply means that it will have lesser fill power and be heavier than the goose down
Now it does not mean that 800 fill power will always be warmer than 600 but one thing is for sure that 800 fill power puffer jacket will have more warmth to its weight
Because the warmth of a puffer down jacket will depend upon the amount of down loft used in it
For example, theoretically, a 100g of 400 fill power down jacket will be warmer than 40g of 900 fill power jacket
So yes, the thickness and weight of the puffer jacket still play a role
Despite all the good traits of down insulation, when it gets wet all insulating properties get lost because it clumps together and loses its loft
Some companies like Arc’teryx intentionally place the synthetic insulation in puffer jackets instead of down in moisture-prone areas like armpits

Synthetic Insulation
That’s what I like the most about puffer jackets
Because science and technology are continuously striving to mimic the natural down insulation and I can see it is getting closer
Companies like Columbia, The North Face, and Patagonia, are striving to make some really innovative technology that usually uses polyester fiber clusters along with the tech to provide the warmth that is very closer to the down
And is better in some cases, the major is, that synthetic puffer jacket won’t lose its insulation when get’s wet
Like The North Face invented Thermoball Eco Insulated puffer jacket which will give you the warmth same as 600 fill power down but will not lose the insulation even in humid and rainy conditions
Similarly, Patagonia developed PlumaFill that is made up of polyester fibers to mimic the down insulation
But none of the above synthetic insulation is still warmer than down
Though, PrimaLoft Gold insulation which is according to thletecom is the highest performing synthetic insulation available that provides ultimate warmth to weight ratio, incredible packability, and softness that mimics the goose down
So yes, you can go for puffer jackets that are synthetically insulated because these are in my opinion is ideal for practical life situations and still being stylish
Puffer jackets are also known as quilted jackets for a reason
I am saying this because I’ve seen people claiming that it is just an embellishment to make the jacket more attractive or decorative
Ok that true, but let’s see what’s hidden in the design and why it is one of the most important facts when it comes to the warmth of a puffer jacket?
You may agree that the most puffier jackets are horizontal quilted and most lightweight one ore either diamond/triangle quilted
In simple words, quilting is a design that stores insulation in stitching that can help the down or synthetic fibers to better trap the air and provide warmth only to that particular stitched area where down clusters or polyesters clusters are filled
The quilted design also prevents the insulation from moving which results in better insulation
So yes, quilted design plays a role in the overall quality of warmth a puffer jacket can provide
Do you remember that I’ve said that the weight of the puffer jacket can also add up the warmth?
We’ve talked about fill power and fill weight
It is the fill weight that will finalize whether a Down insulation or synthetics insulation like PrimaLoft, CoreLoft, Thermoball, and PlumaFill will keep you warm enough or not
If you’re in hurry then look at you puffer jacket, if it is bulky and thick but only have 500 fill power then don’t worry because that particular jacket will keep you warmer than a thin but 900 fill power jacket
The general rule of thumb is the puffier the puffer jacket gets the warmer it will be,
When you’re scrolling through different puffer jackets you may notice that it has PrimaLoft (40g, 60g, 80g, etc), Thinsulate (40, 60, 100g, etc), 40g PlumaFill and so on
If you’re not seeing these values then it is most probably a down jacket because I don’t why companies not always openly disclose the weight of insulation
Let’s understand via an example
If your jacket has 60 grams of insulation then according to evocom it means that a 1 meter by 1-meter piece of the insulation will weigh 60 grams
So, the heavier the weight the warmer the insulation will be and this will also add up the thickness, puffiness, and weight of the overall jacket

It is not mandatory from a style perspective that your puffer jacket should be tight
Though if it is tight meaning if it is fitting closes to the body then it will be insulated and retain heat much better than a loose puffer jacket
In short, a close-to-body jacket will keep provide you better warmth and coziness as compared to the big or loose one
But, it is recommended that your puffer jacket should be spacious enough so that it won’t block the shoulders (and overall body) movement
