Now You Know! – All Liquids Weigh the Same

One of those many questions people have, either out of need to know or out of pure curiosity, is whether all liquids weigh the same

And if not, which liquids weigh the most and which are the lightest?

Contrary to what you might think, not all liquids weigh the same in terms of pounds and ounces

Just like solids, liquids have different densities and components that determine how heavy they are

Although they may be similar, most liquids of the same volume do not weigh the same amount

Various liquids like water, oil, milk, liquor and so many more have different densities

How much does water weigh? Here is a table showing how much different amounts of water weigh

Because water is the most common of all liquids, it is often what other liquids are compared to in terms of weight and density

In terms of density, which determines how heavy a liquid is, mercury is the heaviest liquid on Earth

Mercury is 136 times denser than water, which means it weighs considerably more per liter

However, mercury in its liquid form is extremely deadly, so you should definitely not try to weigh the two liquids yourself

Steel, iron and lead are heavier than water when you melt them into a liquid

For example, water is more than ten times denser than hydrogen in its liquid form and is therefore more than ten times heavier

Liquid propane, which millions of people around the world rely on for their energy, weighs about half as much as water

However, in terms of liquids we use or see every day, alcohol and oil are two of the lightest on earth

Alcohols such as ethanol, methanol and isopropyl weigh about 079 grams per cubic meter, while water weighs 1 gram per cubic meter

If you’ve ever mixed oil and water, you’ve probably noticed that the oil floats on top of the water and doesn’t mix with it

This is because oil is slightly lighter than water

As we just learned, alcohol is slightly lighter than water, which seems to indicate that wine weighs less than water

However, wine is only about 10% alcohol on average, with the rest made up of sugar and other additives

Basically, it all depends on what kind of wine you are comparing with water

A wine with a high alcohol content and little sugar will weigh less than water

However, certain commercial wines with high sugar content and only low to medium alcohol content will weigh the same amount as water or more

Does alcohol sink or float? If you ever try to mix pure alcohol like ethanol, methanol, or isopropyl with water, you’re going to have a hard time

Pure alcohol is lighter than water, meaning it will float to the top rather than mixing or sinking to the bottom

Is water heavier than coffee? Whether water is heavier than coffee depends on the type and texture of the coffee

A whole coffee bean is expected to sink in water, meaning it is denser

However, liquid coffee differs in weight and density from a whole coffee bean

Does Milk And Water Weigh The Same? Milk and water are two of the most similar liquids there are in terms of weight and texture

However, milk actually weighs slightly more than water if you compare a liter of milk to a liter of water

Milk is only 87% water and the rest consists of components heavier than water, except fat

Fat is lighter than water, so, in theory, if milk has a high enough fat content, it can be as light as water

But very rarely if ever is there enough fat in milk to make it equal in weight to water

In terms of household liquids and what they weigh, the pyramid looks like this from heaviest to lightest: syrup, milk, water, oil and alcohol
